Retail Business Case Studies Golden Sweets Ice Cream & Chocolates
1299 Washington Avenue, Suite 1
Golden, Colorado 80401
The Who
Golden Sweets Ice Cream & Chocolates is a unique sweets shop located in the heart of downtown. The shops variety of unique approaches allows it to maximize business throughout the year. Adjusted seasonal hours, an old fashioned image and, of course, a variety of quality products are just a few of the reasons that this Golden sweets shop is satisfying sweet tooths all year long.
The What
A steady flow of evening business during summer months justifies staying open until 9:00 p.m. on weeknights and 10:00 p.m. on weekends. Winter hours, on the other hand, will be adjusted to 8:00 p.m. due to less evening traffic. While summer months see more evening traffic, the fall and winter months see an increase due to Christmas, Valentines Day, and Easter holidays. But, what really separates this burgeoning business from similar stores serving ice cream is a unique image. A complete old-fashioned soda fountain quickly identifies the store as a full service ice cream store. The all-natural, quality ice cream also helps differentiate Golden Sweets Ice Cream & Chocolates from other shops selling ice cream. Finally, it is a complete candy store with bulk penny-style candies as well as a full line of chocolates. And those unmatched candy and chocolate offerings make this the all-encompassing sweets shop.
We chose Golden to locate our business because we live here, in close proximity to our store, and we felt there was a niche to fill here, said owners Bob and Linda List. With no other ice cream store open in the evening, Golden was an ideal choice for the business location. A background in retail, gourmet, and sweets since the mid-seventies, the wide-open marketplace, and the more than satisfying living situation made Golden, well, the perfect fit. It is what we know.
The Why
The benefits of this location have already been easy to see. Sales have been strong in the first month of business and customers have actually thanked us for opening the store, said Linda. Goldens strong Chamber of Commerce and Downtown Merchants Association have been supportive of many new businesses, as well as being active in planning special events downtown throughout the summer. The Golden Urban Renewal Authority (GURA) and the City of Golden have also helped economically through certain programs offered to new businesses. So when it all adds up, Golden is simply good for business.
Clear Creek Books
1200 Washington Avenue
Golden, Colorado 80401
The Who
In December of 2007, Clear Creek Books opened in historic downtown Golden. Golden hasnt had a bookstore in awhile, said owner Craig Morgan. After looking at other locations in similar shopping districts it was decided that Golden was just right. The community of Golden has a strong record of supporting independent merchants. Locals missed having a bookstore in town, and with the increase in tourist traffic through the summer months, the time and place were perfect. When the retail space on the corner of 12th & Washington Avenue opened up, I saw an opportunity to open a bookstore in a wonderful location.
The Why
In the last six months, many new businesses have moved in and many additional opportunities have become available. I have seen positive changes happening in downtown Golden. Foot traffic has increased, and the addition of new housing in the historic downtown district means many more residents will shop locally. The numerous events in downtown Golden also bring thousands of visitors to town. These events happen throughout the year and add to the increase in foot traffic and sales.
I look forward to many more years in historic downtown Golden.
The Who
Brand new to historic downtown Golden, GRAPPA Mediterranean Bistro and Café has only been open a little over a month. Our location, right on Clear Creek, is wonderful, says Ricardo Tondowski, owner and partner. Previously located in Boulder for four years, Our new Golden location affords us the opportunity to provide a unique dining experience on our outdoor patio overlooking Clear Creek.
The Why
Golden is a very welcoming community. We have received a lot of support from everyone in the community, and expect that 90% of our business will be locals. Word of mouth here has been the best advertising to date.
Were looking forward to providing great food in a wonderful location and community that are happy we are here.

The Who
From Earthy to Elegant is our motto. Said Joan Morasch, owner of JUNA, Your Boutique, an eco-sensitive, mother earth friendly, green, fair trade company who strongly supports local artists. A company encouraging consumers to become more aware of the results of buying fair trade. Affordable items of great quality can still come from companies who treat their workers well, said Joan. Through their support of local artisans and crafts people, fair trade and wages, and a strong stance against child labor, JUNA provides economic security and creates long term working relationships. We have a conscience when we shop for our wares. Working with the Fair Trade Federation who networks with artists and craftsman from around the world. For example, health care and education are guaranteed to employees with the Fair Trade Commission. Yet the clothing and giftware is still eclectic and unique, and gifts are crafted by local artists and from around the world. Its gorgeous clothing you can purchase with a clean conscious.
The Why
Golden offers a large volume exposure for JUNA. Its accessible to everything that Colorado has to offer and is conveniently located between Denver and mountains, drawing a wide range of guests into the community. The town is vibrant, yet old fashioned. Neighboring shopkeepers are warm and welcoming. I consider Golden the heartbeat of Colorado," said Joan.
After plenty of research and window-shopping for a new location, the city of Golden floated to the surface. My left-hand woman, Suzanne, has been a resident of Golden for nearly 20 years, Joan said. She told me to go have lunch, walk around, peek into windows...then decide. That was all it took to find the perfect relocation spot for JUNA. Here, in a beautiful community full of growth and new faces each and every day. Constantly in motion. Uphill and aware. Golden has so much to offer.
Golden has always had an immense draw. Lunchtime is usually hopping and creates plenty of walking traffic. Both locals and tourists are inspired to get out and about, delighted by the climate, small town charm, and overall aptitude of Golden. Many visitors from around the world visit our town. Lets face, it, Coors is a well-known and celebrated industry, and the Colorado School of Mines is a highly regarded learning facility, said Joan.
JUNA is proud to offer a wide array of Global fashions that are Fair Trade. Our goal is to have something just delicious here in the store for each and every one of you. All the current fashions available and most of the beautiful styles are available in all sizes.
Chelsea of London
1201 Washington Avenue
Golden, Colorado 80401
The Who
Chelsea of London, Goldens first lingerie store, opened 15 years ago in September 1993. As the only privately owned lingerie boutique in the metro area west of I-25, Golden was the perfect location. What a great opportunity to service the mountain communities as well as the western metro area, said owner Judy Hamilton. Golden has always been known for its small town charm, friendly people and laidback atmosphere. I know first hand. I grew up right in Golden.
The What
Chelsea of London provides beautiful, upscale lingerie and bath luxuries in a comfortable atmosphere. Our staff is trained in bra fitting so all the pretty things will fit perfectly and look great. You never feel pressured or embarrassed says Judy, Hey, were real people too!
The Why
Being located in Golden has been an asset to business. A wealth of historical sites and wonderful events continually draw locals and tourists alike, adding to an already exciting climate. The City of Golden also takes great pride in creating a modern infrastructure with beautiful bridges and buildings designed to enhance that olde town charm. I especially like the beautiful bronze sculptures along the Clear Creek walkway, a feast for the eyes! All of these things have guests coming back to experience more and more of Golden.
By creating its own special niche in Golden, Chelsea of London can provide their clientele with the Haute style from the foremost lingerie manufacturers in the international market. Chantelle, Marie Jo, Claire Pettibone, Hanky Panky, and Simone Perelle are a few of the quality designers proudly featured. Annick Goutal, the famous French perfumer, is the latest addition to the quality fragrance lines.
As we celebrate our 15th year doing what we love to do, we would like to thank you for enjoying fine lingerie in a fun boutique located in the great community of Golden. Many thanks!
